Hello and welcome to my portfolio. I am a web developer located in Chapel Hill, N.C. who specializes in front-end development as well as back-end PHP development. Thank you for taking a moment to browse my work. As usual, I am always available for freelance projects.
My passion is programming for interactivity. Right now, the web is one of the only mediums where we can allow users to interact. Interactivity leads to perceived credibility leads to user satisfaction.
Starting this summer, I will be working at Swarm Interactive as a web programmer. Swarm produces medical websites and animations for medical practices around the world. They also do custom interactive projects that have been featured on National Geographic and Discovery.
I currently work as the lead student developer in the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication's startup, reesenews.org. There, I helped create the organization's website, a mobile publishing platform and several innovative interactive graphics, including Staying in Bounds, which was featured on SI.com
Before was produced as graduation from UNC came closer and closer. I realized there were several things I hadn't done before I was going to graduate and move on. In fact, I hadn't even vocalized them.
Before is one of the most artistic programming projects I have done yet. It is a way for people to vocalize their goals and explore the goals of others.

Pick the Winning Shot was a collaboration between UNC graphic design student Evan Bell and myself. Evan had built a static graphic of famous UNC buzzer beaters.
Folks at reesenews decided that this could become a great interactive where people had to choose the correct shooter based on hints and locations of shots. My favorite part of making the game was watching people try to get high scores.

Shot by Shot is a photo database programmed by myself and designed by Ashley Bennett. It is a way for users to explore reesenews sports photos, especially the wonderful photos by Andrew Dye.
The result is that you can see all dunks by Harrison Barnes during the NCSU game this year. The program currently runs using hand-written XML. It will eventually be transitioned to a mysql databased and PHP will output the same formatted XML.

I spent my first three months at Reesenews developing the website which all students would later use. The site has a WordPress backend that is highly customized due to the organizations needs. It uses many CSS layout tricks in conjunction with JavaScript.
I later built an interactive graphic which was featured on SI.com and a mobile platform using WordPress which utilized user-generated content to cover an event.

Erik Perel is a NASCAR photographer who has recently started his own wedding photography business. He came to Ashley Bennett and myself for a website in Spring 2011. Ashley did a great job on the design
I built the theme using custom taxonomies to sort through featured images and NextGen gallery with a prettyPhoto lightbox. The theme has some CSS3 features which will only work in newer browsers, but it is a great example of what the future of web design will look like.

We were in a rush to find a way users could interact with each other at Dance Marathon, one of UNC-Chapel Hill's largest fundraisers. I decided to set up a mobile-optimized micro-site. Users were able to MMS text photos or e-mail them.
The website did about 3,000 views in two days, two-thirds of which were from mobile devices. I built the website using a mobile sniffer WordPress plugin and then built a mobile theme in two days.

This game is a basic quiz which pulls from a bank of questions. At any time, reporters can change an XML file which will automatically change the content. The game was picked up by many publications, including SI.com and newsobserver.com.
I programmed the project using ActionScript 3.0 and XML. I won't geek out about the details too much, but if someone wants to chat about it I'd be glad to talk. I am currently working on developing an iPad version of the game.

Latino journalism & media was a summer project during 2010. My greatest challenge during the project was figuring out how to intregrate both a Spanish and English website because my clients wanted it to be bilingual.
I ended up doing two separate WordPress installations, one in english, one in spanish. The site is operated now by the UNC School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

My role as multi-platform developer was to create the website for Reesenews.org and then to be the lead programmer for original interactive content.
In my time as multi-platform developer, I developed Reesenews's customized WordPress backend and theme. I also ported several interactive graphics to iPad.
May 2010 - present
I work part-time for Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, which occasionally uses me to do troubleshooting on its websites, like When in Dome.
In fall 2010, I developed a mobile website for N.C. Science Festival, which was a project driven by Morehead Planetarium. The website featured a live calendar of events and sponsorship information about the festival.

I originally came to The Daily Tar Heel with the intention to be a reporter, but as I started to fall in love with programming, I decided to apply for the Multimedia & Online position.
I spent a summer at The Daily Tar Heel. It was a particularly important time because The Daily Tar Heel was transitioning its website from a Drupal-based backend to Gryphon. I also developed interactive graphics like the Atwater Trial Timeline and Explore: Ackland Art Museum.
